STAY AT SOUTHWEST MICHIGAN’S PREMIER COUNTRY ESTATE

Each building on The Morris Estate comes with a story. As E.M. Morris established his country estate in Southwest Michigan, he built many necessary structures for the working farm in the 1930s. His daughter, Mary Lou Leighton, continued the tradition by building an estate home, The River House. She also saved many local buildings from demolition by moving them onsite as well as funding restoration projects on components of the original farm. The River House, the Blacksmith Lodge, Red Horse Inn, and Millstone Inn are all original structures with storied pasts that have been painstakingly renovated to create beautifully furnished accommodations for your visit to the Michigan countryside.

Blacksmith Lodge

As a working farm in the early 1900s, the agricultural property needed a blacksmith shop for practical jobs, such as shoeing horses or forging wagon wheels. As automobiles and tractors outpaced antiquated tools and machinery, the blacksmith shop was converted to a garage and attached to a newly constructed residence. The Blacksmith Lodge has been a boarding house for local ministry workers, the personal home of family members, and now private lodging for rent to travelers or wedding clients of The Morris Estate.

Tucked into the wooded area adjacent to the historic covered bridge, The Millstone Inn was named after antique millstones discovered during renovations, which now grace the front entrance of the captivating cabin. Constructed to house maple syrup-making equipment in 1937, the original structure was fondly called “the sugar shack” by family members who enjoyed hours together during the sap boil each year. Find true tranquility as you take in the stunning views of the ponds, bridge, and St. Joseph River from the wall of windows.

Perhaps the oldest structure on The Morris Estate, The Red Horse Inn, began life as a trading post in the 1800s along the St. Joseph River, where French fur traders bartered with Native inhabitants of the land. Threatened by destruction, it was floated down the river and carefully perched on a bluff overlooking the water. It is also said to be the hidden spot for high-wager poker games between E.M. Morris and local farmers and landowners.

We have nothing but wonderful things to say about The Morris Estate!

It was the perfect venue for our Fall 2023 wedding. My now-husband and I had toured about 10 other venues, but as soon as we toured with Adara we were sold. No matter how many questions or tours we requested, The Morris Estate team always made us feel like a priority. Because of Adara, Nate, Cara, and Ryan’s efforts, we had the best night of our lives! Also, a special shout out to catering. We had majority of our guests tell us we had the best catering they’ve ever had at a wedding! I still think about the mushroom risotto and beef brisket <3 Only book here if you want: -Dedicated coordinators and a team who make this whole process easy -A beautiful venue that can also act as a one stop shop with decorations -Two spacious getting ready rooms -The best night of your life!

I would give 15/10 on my interactions with all those at The Morris Estate. They were professional, extremely understanding, and always brought solutions to the table with any ‘bad' news.

“First and foremost- we had an absolutely beautiful wedding, and we owe so much to The Morris Estate. Everything to make an event go from ‘good’ to ‘great’ was paid attention to by their staff and taken care of without even asking. A family-run business that has hospitable staff and answers all the questions you didn’t even know you needed to ask. I think the ‘true’ review is how this company responded to COVID delays- I find that stressful situations are the best time to gauge people/companies from their response. Our coordinator helped me navigate through ‘what happens now.’ I can’t thank them enough- there isn’t anything we’d change from our Wedding! Thank you, thank you!”

Our wedding was perfect; the weekend was perfect. We can't wait to go back and stay for our anniversary."

“Our wedding was in May 2021, and I couldn’t imagine having my wedding anywhere else. The chapel, the River House, and the grounds are BEAUTIFUL!! The staff at the Morris Estate were AMAZING, super friendly, and very helpful!!! I worked with a coordinator while planning the wedding and during our wedding weekend. She helped every step of the way, down to the smallest details. Our family and I stayed at the Morris Estate for the weekend. The River House is stunning, and the food was amazing!!!

I would highly recommend Morris Estate for your wedding.

“We absolutely loved the Morris Estate as our Venue! The Chapel is perfectly set up for a wedding. From the men’s and women’s dressing rooms in the basement to the size of the Chapel itself. It is perfect. Having the reception right next door is wonderful and makes things so much easier! The tent they use for the reception is so spacious that it feels like a building itself. The grounds provide absolutely gorgeous photos. We worked with our coordinator, and she was the kindest and most helpful person that we have ever worked with. Having a wedding during COVID provided its own challenges, and she worked diligently with us to ensure our day went as smoothly as it could go. We let the Morris Estate team have control of how to set up the reception area with a combination of Morris décor and our own décor, and they made it look incredible.”
